Do you shop on Facebook Marketplace? Personally, I love it. I was always very cautious about buying things on Craigslist because you couldn’t see the person on the other end. Not that something couldn’t go wrong on Marketplace, but being able to look at a person’s profile picture and view their ratings as a seller does provide a smidge of comfort and security. I started shopping on Facebook Marketplace almost 2 years ago and since then, I have found some amazing things at unbeatable prices. Sure, there is a certain amount of luck involved , but I’m going to share 10 tips so that you can increase your odds and find those great deals on Facebook Marketplace too.
Tips to Finding Great Deals on Facebook Marketplace
1. Turn on notifications.
Before you look at one more thing in Facebook Marketplace, turn your notifications on. This will allow you to get notifications about items that you’ve saved (will get to that in a minute), items similar to those you’ve looked at, price drops, new items, and even how many people have viewed the same item as you.
To do this, click on “settings” next to “notifications” and click “on” for all categories. Your screen should look like mine pictured below.
2. Check Marketplace frequently
A huge part of thrifting is luck. Yes, there is a strategy to it, but if you want to increase your chances to find things you love, you have to check frequently. Checking frequently will increase your chances of being the first person to come across a new listing or the first to see a price drop. However, it’s simply not possible to spend all your time on Facebook. You’ve got a job, children, husband, the list goes on, right?? Turning your notifications on will help tremendously with this. You’ll be on even when you’re not able to be.
3. Use specific search terms.
The search bar is an incredible tool and you should use it to your advantage. I always use it when I’m looking for a specific item. Just last night as I was lying in bed, an idea came to me, and I started searching for a tiered cake stand. I searched for “tiered cake stand”, “tiered stand”, and “tier cake stand”. If you don’t find what you’re looking for on the first search, don’t give up, try another variation of your search terms. Sometimes even spelling a word wrong will bring up entirely new results.
4. Search for specific brands.
Don’t limit your search terms to only items, search for brands too. I like to do this when I’m looking for an item from a high end retailer. For instance, last night as I was searching for a tiered cake stand, I searched the brand “Royal Albert” as I know they make items similar to what I was looking for.
Some brands that I’ve searched for recently include Ballard Designs, Pottery Barn, Le Creuset, IKEA, Royal Albert, and KitchenAid. Searching for a specific brand on Facebook Marketplace is a great way to get quality, high end items at great prices.
5. Save items you like.
Saving items you like is super important when it comes to finding great deals on marketplace. Saving items will allow you to come back to them item easily, be notified of any price changes, tell you how many other people have viewed the item, tell Facebook what kind of items your searching for to curate your feed, and let you know if the item has sold.
So, what should you save? If you see an item that you like AND the price is right, save it. I wouldn’t save every single thing you like, because that will only lead to your feed becoming cluttered or worse, your house becoming cluttered with items you only somewhat like, but bought for a good deal. If you think it sounds like I’m talking from experience, you’re right!
One of the great things about Facebook Marketplace is when you save items, it automatically sorts them into categories. Every now and then, depending on how much you save, I would go through your categories and do a clean out to keep things up-to-date.
6. Click on the seller’s name.
If you see an item you really love, click on the seller’s name. This will bring up a list of all the items they’re selling and you may just find something else you love. Clicking on the seller’s name will also show you their ratings, which for me, is super important. Some sellers make their ratings private and that makes me a little suspicious. When that happens, I usually don’t continue with the purchase.
This is what your screen will look like if you click on the seller’s name and they have more listings available.
7. Be careful what you click on.
When scrolling through marketplace, I would be very careful what you click on. Marketplace remembers what listings you view, so if one day you decide to click on a car, you’ll then have a bunch of car listings pop-up in your feed. To keep your feed curated and limited to the things you actually want to see, only click on those things.
Tips When You Find An Item You Want
8. Be kind.
Remember that saying, “you get more bees with honey”? When you send an initial message inquiring about an item, be kind. Yes, there are generic messages that you can send, but I don’t recommend doing that if you really want the item. To let the seller know that you’re serious, send them a personalized message. Here’s an example:
“Hi, I really love the striped couch you have for sale. Is it still available?”
I always greet them, show them how much I like the item, and then simply ask if it’s still available. Super simple and trust me, you will be more likely to get the item with this message than someone else who just sent “Is this still available?”
9. What if they don’t respond?
If a seller doesn’t respond to your first message, don’t panic, there’s still a chance. Just send another message.
When I found our couch, I messaged the guy and he didn’t respond. I did freak out a little because I really wanted it. So, later that day, I sent him another message and he finally responded.
If you really want and item and they haven’t listed it as “sold”, just be persistent!
I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t always do this, but it’s a good habit to develop. Don’t offend anyone, but asking a few dollars less should be no big deal.
The key to negotiating is to always have a price in mind that you want to pay. This will help you stand your ground and be more confident when going back and forth.
