A few weeks ago, I had the honor of being apart of the Girl Boss Holiday Pop Up here in Cincinnati. This was the first ever Holiday Pop Up put on by Girl Boss Events and to say it was a huge success, would be a complete understatement. There were over 30 different women-owned small businesses to shop from, complimentary Cavu Coffee, free donuts from The Donut House, photo booth by JScoFoto, and a cute craft area for children by Sweet Petite Seating.
Over the course of the event, I had the pleasure of talking to two of the Girl Bosses and today, I’m sharing our conversations.
Jillian Francois Photography
One of the girl bosses I had the pleasure of speaking with was Jillian. She is an incredibly talented photographer and her passion for what she does is so inspiring.
Q & A:
1. Tell me a bit about yourself:
I’m Jillian Francois Hocker and I own and operate Jillian Francois Photography and Design. I mostly photograph weddings and people, but I really really love photographing landscapes, architecture, and travel. If I could travel the world and take pictures of the world the way I see it, I would be a happy camper.
2. How did you get your start?
I’ve been taking pictures since I was seven years old. As soon as I turned 13, I got my first SLR and I fell in love with film. I went to Antonelli College for a year and then I got an opportunity to tour the country with a band to be a tour photographer. I did that part time for a while and then three and a half years ago, I quit my full time job and decided that I need to be doing this because it’s what makes me most happy.
3. What advice would you give to any girl boss that wants to quit their full time job to pursue their dreams?
Don’t let the fear of quitting your full time job stop you from doing it. You spend so much time at work, you have to do something you love.
Shine By Design
The second small business I had the pleasure of speaking with was Shine By Design. Shine By Design is ran by a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law duo, Anne and Libby Tabor. They use color psychology as well as your personal energy to promote confidence and help you put your best foot forward through their online courses and closet consultations.
Q & A:
1. Tell me a bit about yourself?
I’m Anne Tabor and I’ve been doing this for two years, but I’ve also been doing research on color therapy and personalities for the past seven years. I’ve always been really fascinated with why do I do what I do, why does my husband do what he does, why does my son act this way, and I just want to understand how to relate to people better. Through my research, I realized that every energy has a very distinct mannerism about it, so I teach men and women how to promote their best image through color, clothing, and confidence.
2. How did you get your start?
I started doing this because 10 years ago I had a heart incident and dropped dead. I had a sudden cardiac death and was in the hospital for 9 days. The shock of the AED caused me to get double pneumonia and a 106 degree fever. As a Christian, I realized that God gave me a second chance and I better do something with it. My purpose is to shine my light and to show other women how to shine their light and revive their sparkle by honoring who they are as a woman.
3. What could I expect from a closet consultation?
So many of us go into our closets and it’s the place where things go to die. You have your closet full of clothes that you used to wear before you had the baby or before a life-changing event and every time you see those clothes you shame yourself because they remind you what you used to be instead of what you can be and who you are. So, I go through a closet pitch and I give you ideas and strategies on how to get things out of your closet and then I help you understand what your energy is and what your colors are. I help you set your closet up for success, so that when you go in and pair items, you have a recipe and you know how to put things together and you feel confident with what you put on.
